Happy Father’s Day, Dad!

Father’s Day is this Sunday, June 18th, and I wanted to write a little bit about my Dad, and share it with all of you.

My Dad has always been a constant presence in my life, and I’ve always considered myself extremely lucky for that. We have always had a great relationship, and he has always been there for me when I needed him.

My Dad and I in 1977 or 1978

I lived with him during my teenage years, and wasn’t always the easiest to deal with. There were times when he’d just do things himself instead making me get up and help. I wish I hadn’t been so difficult in that regard, but he’s always loved me inspite of it. Some of my fondest memories of our times together are from when we lived in Callahan. Week long fishing trips during the summer, embarrassing trips to the grocery store (he’ll know what that means lol), and the comical ways he would wake me up in the morning.

He bought me my first car, an automatic, after trying to teach my how to drive a manual Ford Bronco II which I could not, for the life of me, learn how to master. I remember one time he let me drive the Bronco home from the grocery store, and I panicked on an incline nearly rolling into the car behind me. I’m sure he saw visions of insurance rate increases, and figured an automatic was the better way to go. And for that I’m thankful. I did, however, learn how to drive a stick shift a few years later.

He’s always been there helping me, encouraging me, and always pushing me to do better, and be better. I know I can always count on him for his wisdom, advice, and unconditional love. I’ve made my fair share of mistakes and bad decisions, but he’s been there with me through them all, and has never let me down.

My Dad and I at my wedding.

My Dad and I are very similar in temperament – we’re both quiet and reserved. Sometimes when we’re together I notice that we sit the same way – our posture or the way we rest our hands. I get my height from him, and I have his hands.

I can’t ever repay him except to say “thank you” for all of the times he helped me out of a bad situation, came to my rescue when my car broke down, fixed things that I couldn’t fix myself, helped me move or any of the other hundreds of things he’s done for me. I am grateful for every single thing.

When I started dating Mike, I’m sure my Dad never expected that after only 3 months he’d be asked for his blessing for Mike to marry me. Mike and I got engaged pretty quick but he took it in stride, and has always been very accepting of him. I’m thankful for that.

There are so many reasons why I love my Dad. In addition to everything I’ve already mentioned, here are a few more reasons:

  • He’s my hero and I can count on him for anything.
  • He’s hardworking and always has been. It’s hard to get him to slow down.
  • He makes other Dad’s pale in comparison. Yes, my Dad is better than your Dad. There, I said it.
  • He gives the best hugs.
  • He has always believed in me even when I didn’t believe in myself.
  • He is wise and gives good advice.
  • He always leads by example, and taught me how to be a responsible person and how to stand up for myself.
  • He can fix almost anything.
  • He loves me no matter what – mistakes and all.
  • He always provided for me and kept me safe.
  • He is an amazing cook. He makes the best chicken and rice, and anything cooked on the grill or smoker.
  • He has taught me many valuable life lessons.
  • He’s super smart and always has a solution to any problem.
  • He always trusted me as a teenager and gave me the freedom he didn’t have growing up.
  • He has always encouraged me to be independent.
  • He loves my German Chocolate Cake.
  • He’s got a great sense of humor
  • He’s loving and kind.
  • He’s my Dad. The best Dad in the world.

Happy Father’s Day to the best Dad a girl could ask for. I’m not always the best at putting things into words, but I hope I’ve made you proud. I am, and always will be proud to be your daughter. I love you!
