Ben Folds originally wrote The Luckiest (see video below) for a movie, but the scene in which is was to be used was ultimately deleted. It ended up being used in a completely different movie called About Time. I first discovered this song a few years ago and knew it was special after only hearing the first verse. Ben is so adorable in an awkward, Dana Carvey kind of way and this song is adorably awkward as well.
Many times we’ve all made wrong turns in life, been in relationships that weren’t right and if we’re lucky the right person walks into our lives and makes everything suddenly seem perfect. Nothing else matters. Not the past, not who we were before we met them, just the possibility of what we can become. Together.
The last verse of the songs makes me cry every time I hear it….
Next door there’s an old man who lived to his nineties
And one day passed away in his sleep
And his wife; she stayed for a couple of days
And passed away
I’m sorry, I know that’s a strange way to tell you that I know we belong
That I know…..That I am…..The luckiest
